Personalised plates incur no annual fees or hidden costs. In some other states of Australia plates attract an annual fee, but in Queensland once you have purchased your personalised plates, that unique combination is yours forever – unless of course you want to sell them. Personalised plates are exempt from GST* and there are no additional fees for delivery or attachment.
* Under Section 81-5, registration plate sales are GST exempt (see Schedule 1 part 4, A New Tax System (GST) Determination 2000 (No. 2))
Your personalised plates are yours for life. Should you ever wish to transfer the ownership of your plates, you and the acquirer will need to complete a Transfer of Ownership Form and pay a modest fee, at your nearest Queensland Transport Customer Service Centre.
Any person or company with a Queensland CRN can own personalised plates regardless of whether or not they own a car or live in Queensland. Owning personalised plates gives you the "right to display" that particular combination on a Queensland registered vehicle, however many people purchase numerous sets of plates without ever attaching them to a vehicle.
A CRN is a Customer Reference Number provided by Queensland Transport as a means of identification. For individuals, your CRN is normally your driver's licence number. For companies, where applicable, the CRN can be found on the registration certificate. If you do not have a CRN, simply contact Queensland Transport for further information.
The following vehicles can have personalised plates: Motor vehicles, Motorcycles including scooters, Large Trailers (large caravans, mobile homes, semi-trailers, however conditions apply), Conditional (club registered vehicles, golf buggies, historical registered vehicles, special interest vehicles) and Motorised Wheelchairs. Small trailers (eg box trailers, jet-ski trailers, boat trailers), limousines, taxis, ambulances, tractors, farm vehicles and vehicles registered interstate cannot display Queensland personalised plates.
Retro plates can only be attached to a vehicle registered in the same name as the owner of the plates. If there is a secondary owner, then the names must also be in the same order as those on the vehicle registration. The plates cannot be sold and the ownership of the plates cannot be transferred to another person, however the plates can be transferred to another vehicle registered to the original owner of the plates. If the vehicle is transferred to a new owner, the plates must be retained by the original owner and standard issue plates attached to the vehicle. Retro/Customised plates can also be upgraded to personalised plates, thereby allowing the owner to sell, transfer or colourise them for a fee.

The use of aftermarket plate covers of any kind is not recommended. We hope you will enjoy your plates for many years to come and suggest that you do not use plate covers for these reasons.
